PAY
IT FORWARD
Anne L. Day RN, MA, CMT, HNC, CHTP/I
As
I step into the presidency of HTI, I am filled with great gratitude
for all the loving support that has been given to me by so many of you!
It is an honor and privilege to have walked the path with Janet as she
has developed the Healing Touch program. This program has been inspired
by Spirit, and the vision that Janet has given us continues to be a
guiding light to us all. As Janet shared in her keynote, legacy is about
making sure there is someone to carry on our work, to carry forth our
vision. But vision must also be personal as we see how we each fit into
that vision. I am holding Janet's vision as well my own visions for
this organization.
To prepare for the role of President of Healing Touch International,
I stretched beyond my comfort level and committed to doing a Vision
Quest in Hawaii in October of last year. My intention was to become
clear about my visions for the organization, as well as mark the transition
in my life of becoming an "elder", as we are expecting our
first grandchild. We spent a week camping on very sacred land, and three
days of that time alone in silence and fasting. This experience was
profound for me and opened new doors of inner awareness and guidance.
One of the first messages I received was that I must walk my own path,
holding the light of Janet's vision, but not trying to do things exactly
in the same way. I must follow my guidance to see new possibilities
for "Spreading the Healing Light Worldwide".
The third
day, after I had emptied my mind of all the mental chatter and ideas,
and had written pages and pages in my journals, I finally came to a
place of having to surrender even more to the state of Beingness. In
that place I began to get great inspiration about what I wanted to bring
to the mission of this organization. I awoke seeing the pictures of
a wonderful movie I had enjoyed in the last year called "Pay It
Forward". This is a story of a young teen-ager who was challenged
by his teacher, who gave the class the assignment of creating a project
that would make the world a better place. This young boy decided that
if he could help three people in a significant, life-changing way, and
if those three people then "paid that forward" to three others,
who would also "pay it forward" to three others and on and
on, that it would change the world. The story was very moving, and the
love and healing that was portrayed touched my heart deeply.
The guidance I received was that Healing Touch is life-changing.
We are
helping others wake up to who they truly are, which is to get in touch
with their Divine Essence of love. From the beginning of Level I classes,
we teach the importance of opening our hearts and coming from the place
of unconditional love, and how to set the intention of the highest good
for the other. This energy heals on many levels, and thus heals relationships
and communities. I see Healing Touch as a force to help with healing
our world. Therefore, we must "pay it forward" to others!
I challenge each of you to reach out and touch the lives of 3 people
who have not experienced Healing Touch and help them learn about this
loving way to see themselves and the world. Give someone a gift of a
Level I class, or give someone a treatment and talk to them about the
work. Share with them that everyone can learn Healing Touch. I ask you
to "pay it forward", to "Spread the Healing Light Worldwide".
Another way to "pay it forward" is to share with other Healing
Touch students the gifts of this wonderful organization. We are only
6 years old, yet have established a firm foundation in professionalism.
Without this organization, we would not be able to offer certification
to everyone as we do now. The certification process took 3 years to
establish and is an important criteria for credibility as professionals.
Our organization also supports our research, which is essential to moving
us forward as an acceptable modality within the current health care
system. HTI is responsible for our Standards of Practice and Code of
Ethics, which keeps us at a high level of integrity and practice. The
organization supports efforts to integrate Healing Touch into hospitals
and institutions of care with guidelines, policies and insurance codes.
It also supports the expansion of Healing Touch around the world. We
need everyone to support this important organization which supports
us as professionals. Please "pay it forward" by each person
committing to bringing one more person into this organization in the
next year.
I will
continue to work toward the expansion and connection of community within
our family of healers, an important goal of my platform. But it is also
time to focus on touching more lives with this healing energy and each
one of us "paying it forward" to change our world for peace.

and Zilla Adams.
On February
5th and 6th Janet Mentgen and Anne Day came to give Maui's first Advanced
Practice I course and it was a great success. We hosted our island residents
along with visitors from Oahu, Virginia, Oregon and Australia. The course
was given at the beautiful and luxurious Kalama Heights in Kihei. The
days were beautiful and we were able to play by a whale watch trip and
a beautiful Wailea Beach Walk, passing all the 5 star hotels, beaching
it and of course snorkeling. Janet was able to give 2 community lectures
and had a wonderful response from the attendees. We had all the six
CHTP's from Maui present and were able to pin three of them by an exceptional
Mentor, Zilla Adams CHTP. The three pinned were Jasmine Apo, Maryann
Baros LMT and Eve Methot RN. We plan to have Janet back again to present
Advanced Practice II next year and welcome all visitors to the Island.
Attendees may stay at the beautiful and luxurious Kalama Heights with
rooms at $125 for 2 people, including meals. Come and visit our Island
and treat yourself to a wonderful experience and meet your island neighbors.
Contact Eve Methot CHTP 875-2134 when you ready for your next HT course.
West Maui
practice sessions will be at Kalama Heights, 5:30pm to 8:30pm on the
last friday of each month. We charge $10 for students, donation basis
for clients. Dinner availble for $5.

"The
Rosie Wall Memorial Run" was held in Kailua Labor Day Weekend at
the Kailua Recreation Center. Savitri Kumaran, Jane Moore, Midge Strelow,
Susan Suzuki, Jonny Willing, Pat Borengasser, Erman Fujinaga, Stan Young
and Erlene Yeasel all came to give Healing Touch treatments to the runners.
It was a very successful day, treatments continued from 7am until 10:30am.
Claudia Fujinaga coordinated again this year as in the past and the
turn out seems to be getting bigger every year. The money collected
from this run is donated to the Queen's Medical Center to be used for
Healing Touch scholarships and to the Dental Hygienist scholarships.
Camp Anuenue
is an annual camp for kids (6-21 years old) with cancer sponsored by
the American Cancer Society. Children have an opportunity to have normal
camp fun in a safe environment with 24-hour coverage by nurses and doctors.
During the June 10-16, 2001 camp, Healing Touch was offered to campers
and counselors. Sixteen Healing Touch practitioners volunteered one
day
to offer this special session. Word spread quickly through the camp
about this "magic" treatment for rest and relaxation and more
than 2/3 of the campers came for the treatment. There was also one very
ill camper who was to be at camp for his last time. The healing touch
treatments, along with pain medication, allowed him to attend to many
activities in greater comfort. Healing touch at Camp Anuenue was very
successful and the healers are already invited to return next year!
On July
7th from 5:pm to 9:30 pm Healing Touch volunteers gave treatments non-stop
at the finish line of the "Relay for life" at Kailua Beach
Park. This relay takes place during the summer as different communities
around the state pick up their portion of the race. Marge Kuba who volunteers
for the American Cancer Society as well as giving Healing Touch treatment
to the patients at Kailua Permanente Medical Center, recruited June
Takenaka, Miyoko Shimoda, Maureen Nishida, Mavis Gushiken, Terri Jennings,
and Karen Eakman to help.
"The
Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure" took place at the Kapiolani Park
on September 30th. There were about 600 racers of which about 50% were
Cancer survivors. There were about 60 treatments given that day from
about 7am to 10am. Sue Slavish did a great job coordinating for the
Queen Medical Center. Dr. Kim Perkins, MD., ObGyn answered questions
about breat cancer
while Fairlene Aladieff, Pat Borengasser Dave Bower, Ross Rasmussen,
Barb Shirland, Toni Snellback and Susan Suzuki kept the energy flowing.
On November
17th in Kalihi Valley, Our Lady of the Mount Church held a community
Health Fair at which Dave Bower, Gitta Gerhold, Ross Rasmussen and Toni
Snellback provided Healing Touch treatments all morning. Most of those
treated had never heard of Healing Touch bud judged it as "very
good".

The
Healing Touch Hawaii office is moving from Kaua'i to Oahu on April 15,

Pat
Borengasser and Jonny Willing, Healing Touch Hawaii class coordinators,
have opened this new center. They will have treatment rooms and classroom
space for rent, by the hour, by the day, etc. It's a wonderful way for
Healing Touch practitioners to get started in a practice. And it's conveniently
located in central Oahu, with easy access to H-l and H-2 freeways.
The
doors will open on April 15th. A grand opening and blessing is scheduled
for Weds. May 8th from 5-7 p.m. Congratulations and best wishes to Pat

Can
Healing Touch Help with Arthritis?
My
husband doesnt believe in miracles yet he allows his family to.
Perhaps youll decided that what Im about to share doesnt
rate miracle status but for my teenage daughter, McKenzie and for me,
it does. I first began to worry when McKenzie, barely 14 continued to
complain about her shoulders and knees aching. After a summer of persistent
growing pains she wanted an appointment with her doctor.
I made it thinking that the pain would be resolved with gentle encouragement
to get some exercise or possibly a prescription. I expected her life
to promptly return to normal.
Thats not what happened. After several visits, countless tests,
and frequent consultations, the specialists confirmed that McKenzie
had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. For the next year, McKenzie tried
a variety of drugs approved for pain, depression, and joint deterioration.
The pain went from bad to worse.
The
only good thing was that her brother drove her to and from school and
she had to pass up the dreaded PE classes. Then her doctor advised she
eliminate all foods from the deadly nightshade family from her diet.
To some it means no tomatoes or potatoes. To a teenager a future without
pizza and fries is hardly appealing. Thats when things got out
of control. McKenzie couldnt eat or act like a typical teenager
and the pain kept her awake at night and worn out during the day. Then
I learned about Healing Touch and everything changed.
After
my first day of Level 1 classes I knew I had to get to work on McKenzie.
At first she was the typical teenager full of uncertainty and outwardly
pessimistic. Id like to think it was my enthusiasm that won her
over. Most likely she figured that Healing Touch wouldnt work
and once she proved me wrong Id leave her alone. So we began.
With my Level 1 textbook open on the massage table I followed the treatment
process as though my life depended on it. I grounded myself, assessed
her body, set my intention for the highest good, and activated my hands
for healing. I played music she had chosen, a Christian tape of scripture
memory songs for overcoming anxiety. Then I started with the techniques
I learned in class to balance her energy and boost her chakras. After
this treatment, she napped for three hours then slept through the night
for the first time in months.
From Spring through Summer I continued working on McKenzie. Over time
her joints seemed less painful and sleep more soothing. She started
smiling and making jokes and talking to me as I worked on her. She shared
her dreams and ambitions during our Healing Touch treatments. As she
talked I learned about what has hurt her and what has made her happy.
In late November 2001, we returned to the specialist for more testing.
After a series of questions and physical exams, he declared her joints
normal and healthy without a single indication that medication is needed.
You be the judge. The change wasnt sudden like a miracle in the
movies but it has been profound. Is there any other word to describe
what has happened?
A
Word From McKenzie
When my mother came to me and told me she wanted to do a new thing she
found out about called Healing Touch, I was very skeptical. I thought
it would be some dumb thing that would take up my time and not help
me with anything.
After we started I was very relaxed and I felt different. I could sleep
and be awake fully in the mornings. I didnt think it was doing
anything until we saw the doctor again. Now I am a believer in Healing
Touch.

Bosom
Buddies of Hawaii
The next training for Bosom Buddies of Hawaii Healing Touch Volunteers
was held on Oahu April 26-28, 2002. All Healing Touch providers were
invited to apply to be a Bosom Buddy. Volunteer Buddies are needed in
many communities. The program is increasing in popularity as the word
gets out in the community. The most wonderful recent development of
the program is that women who were "clients" for a year are
now coming to take Healing Touch classes so that they may volunteer
to help other women with breast cancer.
In the Winter edition of the Queen's Medical Center's Health Connection,
one such woman, Debra Duggan-Takagi was quoted to say, " The steadying
force that my Bosom Buddy Lynn Hearl so generously provided had a tremendous
positive impact on my rate of recovery,". Debra credits the rapid
healing of her incision and skin after surgery and radiation as well
as her positive attitude to Bosom Buddies. Debra now serves on the Advisory
Council of Bosom Buddies of Hawaii.
To apply for the training call 585 LIFE.
